Move the file "americas" to your desktop (this is how I did it, you might be able to just rename it to something other than "americas") and rename the RODG1.6 file to "americas." Now when you go launch medieval 2 total war from steam, launch the americas campaign. You will notice a file named something like RODG1.6.
Instead, go to your mod folder inside the Medieval II file where the americas, tuetonic, britannia, and crusades files are. I REPEAT, DO NOT START THE GAME FROM THE DESKTOP SHORTCUT. Choose your preferred language however don't start the game from the desktop shortcut.
